Rothschild's giraffe joins list of species threatened by extinction

The Rothschild's giraffe is the latest charismatic African mammal to be declared "Endangered" by IUCN (the International Union for the

Conservation of Nature), adding to the growing number of species under threat of extinction. The recent analysis by Fennessy and Brenneman

2010 indicates that the Rothschild's populations are in peril and the IUCN Red List supports this (http://www.iucnredlist.org/apps/redlist/details/174469/0)

A volunteer whose interest in giraffe was sparked when she joined an Earthwatch project in Namibia eight years ago, has helped to establish the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF).

Rebecca Muddeman is one of the founders of GCF, which officially launched in London in February of this year. Her inspiring story began in 2002 when she volunteered on an Earthwatch desert elephant and giraffe project in Namibia. It was there that she met Dr Julian Fennessy, a co-founder of GCF; Dr Fennessy is currently Executive Director of the Kenya Land Conservation Trust and one of the world's foremost giraffe experts.

Open letter from 50 Conservation Organisations to Zimbabwe

GCF's goal is the support of Giraffes in the wild - this decision by Zimbabwe is contrary to our beliefs.  GCF signed the letter on this basis.  The open letter opposing the proposed transfer of wild life from Zimbabwe to North Korea was signed by a total of 50 animal conservation organisations.  Please read the letter and sign the pledge opposing this, please http://www.bornfree.org.uk/wildlife-trade/.

Jean-Patrick Suraud and GCF's work is profiled in this excellent piece aimed at 8-12 year old school children published in the US.  Education and conservation among children is a core strand GCF will be looking to develop in the future.  Kids today are the conversationalists of the future.

For an African icon, the giraffe still holds a surprising number of cards close to its chest. We don’t even know how many there are at present. So analysing giraffe DNA samples is of utmost importance for research – and, given the size and relaxed demeanour of the animals, collecting them should be easy. Not so, says Andy Tutchings of GCF.
