Collaring removal successful
Early May we removed the giraffe satellite collars. Indeed, we realized that some collars were causing irritation and even injured giraffe neck.
To prevent any problem, we removed them all.
Dr Peter Morkel, from South Africa, responded immediately to our request and came to Niger.

With help of the local teams composed by ASGN staff, Niger environment Ministry, and the giraffe guides, we captured the giraffes, removed the collars and cure them without problem. All the giraffe are OK now and healthy.

End of a very interesting adventure! As if we had to remove the collar quickly, we learnt a lot about the captures, the anesthesia process, how to improve collars design, and of course about giraffe daily activity and dry season home range. We could not have data about giraffe home range expansion....But we collected thousands of very valuable data. Now we are looking for alternative solution to determine giraffe expansion zone which is still the priority to prevent Giraffe - Human conflicts.
