  • I have been fortunate to work with giraffe in captivity and the wild for nearly 20 years and even had the privilege of hand-rearing one, but understanding their needs in the wild is very different. There is something so magical, so connecting, so emotional and timeless in viewing animals in the wild; giraffe are one of the species that stops us in our tracks every time. Giraffe are under threat in so many parts of Africa and GCF is at the forefront of research and securing a sustainable future for this incredible species. I will always promote the incredible work they do!

Hayden Turner, TV Presenter & Producer, HT Private Safaris

  • Giraffes have been significantly threatened primarily by poachers and natural habitat loss. All life forms including these gentle herbivores play an important role in keeping local ecosystems functional. Destruction of these would ultimately have significant ecological impact. The work of the GCF is critical towards helping prevent such an outcome.

Lorie Karnath, President, The Explorers Club

  • When Owen-Smith's Megaherbivores book appeared in 1988, 8 recognized species met his criterion: 2 elephants, 4 rhinos, hippo and giraffe. However, recent studies show that Africa's forest elephants share more genes with mammoths than with savanna elephants and that "the giraffe" is really a complex of species. Clearly, there is much to learn and time for many beleaguered populations is running out. GCF is uniquely positioned to inform and shape both our understanding of giraffe diversity and our efforts to conserve them.

Dr Bruce Patterson, MacArthur Curator of Mammals, Chicago Field Museum

  • I can't imagine a world without giraffe, and thanks to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, I'll never have to. At last, an organization of their own to protect and preserve these magnificent creatures. I invite you to join us - to read about what we're doing and learn how you, too, can help keep nature's tallest blondes safe.

Lynn Sherr, Broadcasting Journalist, Author & GCF Patron, USA

  • In interviews and presentations I'm often asked for advice on how to succeed as a professional photographer. My standard answer is "photograph that which you love." Unfortunately, what I love to photograph may not exist in a few short decades. At this point in my life, the desire to preserve Africa's wildlife supersedes all other considerations, and the giraffe's current predicament is representative of the greater threat to all wildlife throughout the African continent. My images and energy can be put to no better use than to advance the cause of giraffe conservation.

Billy Dodson, Nature Photographer & GCF Patron, USA
